____________________________________________PETER in the Book of Acts—Chapters 1-5
And now, leaving the Gospels behind, we turn our focus to PETER in the Book of Acts.
Chapter One
As the disciples obey Jesus’ command to wait in Jerusalem for the empowerment of the Spirit from on high, they assemble in an upper room and wait approximately 10 days. Doing what? Praying and waiting.
Meanwhile, their leader, PETER, recommends choosing someone to replace Judas. Notice how well this uneducated man quoted Psalm 55. He says that the criterion for their choice that day was that the chosen one must have (1) been around the disciples since the baptism of John and (2) been a witness to the ascension. (vv. 21-22). The candidates were Joseph and Matthias. Matthias won the lot toss. Scholars have criticized the handling of this selection since. Here is the succinct critique of Dr. Thomas cited below:
They only prayed after they had chosen the two. Was this quite right? . . .. Was Peter right? May not God have had His own way and time for filling up the gap by the choice of Paul? [Paul wasn’t saved until c. AD 37]. There are only “Twelve” foundations in the heavenly city (Rev. xxi) It almost seems as if Peter had once again acted impulsively instead of simply “waiting,” as his Master told him. . . .(p. 80)
Perhaps Matthias had been one of those sent out in the group of seventy, as well as witnessing many miracles and getting to be present for the amazing Day of Pentecost, which comes up next. The lot method is never used again after the Holy Spirit comes to direct Christians.

Chapter Two
What a turning point Acts 2 was in the life of the fisherman, PETER! Before Pentecost, he was timid about facing arrest, even after the resurrection. The disciples were still remaining hidden. After Pentecost, he confronts his antagonists by charging them with the death of God’s Messiah. Dr. Con Campbell points out that PETER was preaching a few yards away from David’s tomb in his Episode 4 of “In Pursuit of Peter” on YouTube. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlw6kp_ojbg&t=849s). Watch the video from beginning to 14:33 minutes.
The apostles had a megachurch on their hands. Preaching of the gospel and instruction took place in the large temple courts and further instruction, prayer, breaking of bread, and fellowship in homes. PETER, preaching in the temple courts assures each one that the same promise that the disciples had received could be claimed by them.
Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call . . .Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. (vv. 38-39, 41 NIV)
Dr. Campbell shows us in his video historic baptismal tanks around the temple area. Perhaps the apostles and other disciples descended those ancient steps to immerse the new believers that day. The church was born.

Chapter Three
PETER and his partner, John, begin getting into trouble. They were simply going to the temple to pray when a beggar asks for alms. PETER was “broke” in material goods but offers prayer for the man, and he was healed after being a cripple for forty years. A crowd gathers, and again the bold apostles take advantage of the situation to preach. PETER reminds them of their sin during the mob scene of Jesus’ arrest. His charges given directly to the leaders in the second person are extremely convicting in vv. 13-15: “You handed him over to be killed…you disowned him before Pilate…You disowned the Holy and Righteous One…You killed the author of life.” (NIV)

Chapter Four
In this chapter, we learn that the church grew to 5,000 after PETER’S second sermon (v. 4). The authorities arrived at the scene, arrest the disciples peacefully, and question them. Again, PETER boldly stands up to the interrogators. They are impressed with his boldness, but they threaten the disciples to stop preaching about Jesus. Note: The high priest of the day who led the trial against Jesus and this trial was Caiaphas. Check out this interesting Wikipedia article about the discovery of the bones of Caiaphas in November, 1990, in Israel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caiaphas ossuary. PETER and John are released and join their praying friends. The group prays for more boldness and miracles to back them up, quoting Psalm 2. These believers knew their Bible. The place was shaken after prayer.

Chapter Five
The Ananias and Sapphira Episode. Apparently, PETER is shown through the spiritual gift of the word of knowledge that Ananias and Sapphira are lying to the group and to God about the true amount they gained from the sale of their property. (See I Cor. 12:8) PETER’S reputation as a spiritual leader grows, and people learn that they better not “mess up” around him. Perhaps this reputation even reached to Samaria, and Simon the Sorcerer begs to be spared punishment when PETER rebukes him in Acts 8.
The prayers in Acts 4 for boldness and miracles is answered to such an extent that the religious leaders become alarmed at the large number of Christian adherents. People even receive their healing by releasing their faith at the contact of PETER’S shadow! The Jewish leaders feel they must do something about the exponential growth of the church. They arrest the apostles (v. 18ff).
But God…verse 19 tells of God’s intervention by sending an angel to the jail to release the disciples with the order to go to the temple and preach His message of life. Notice their obedience in verse 21, “At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.” (Emphasis mine) PETER was in that obedient group. When he was questioned again, this was his reply: “We must obey God rather than men!”
The jealous leaders wanted to execute the disciples, but a wise counselor named Gamaliel counseled the court to let them go in case this matter was of God. He was convinced that it would “fizz out” if its source was not God. That advice saved the lives of God’s men, and they were released after a flogging for not obeying the court’s order to stop preaching.
The chapter ends on a positive, triumphant note in vv. 41-42:
“The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.”
